Stoke 26 Anselmians 42
Stoke welcomed Anselmians to Hartwell lane for the first ever meeting of the two clubs. It was a game of two halves, Stoke on top in the first and the visitors dominating the second.
It was a positive start to the game for Stoke, with two tries in the first ten minutes. Stoke received the kick off and after several phases made their way to the opposition twenty two. Anselmians were penalised for not releasing, the decision was to kick to the corner rather than take the points. From the resulting line out the ball was driven over the line by the forwards with Sam Yorke claiming the try. As Ciaran Shone prepared to take the conversion the strong wind blew the ball off the kicking tee, with time running out Shone reacted quickly to pick the ball up and drop kick it over for an impressive conversion. A second try came a few minutes later when Jack Gosling and Will Plant exchanged passes down the left with Gosling beating the final defender to score. Shone added the conversion to make it 14-0. The visitors started to establish themselves in the game and scored two tries of their own to make the score 14-12 after twenty five minutes. The final quarter of the game was even, with the ball mainly in midfield. However, in the final minute Manu Shutte received a kick well in his own half, cut inside, and appearing to be going nowhere found a gap and broke the defensive line, he passed inside to Jamie Loska who offloaded in the tackle to Sam Yorke to score his second try extending the lead to 19-12. Stoke got close to the line with the final play of the half but were penalised for holding on, the visitors kicking the ball out to bring the half to an end.
The first fifteen minutes of the second half saw the game slip away from Stoke. An early penalty for Anselmians was converted, which was quickly followed by the first of three yellow cards for Stoke. Jack Gosling sent to the bench for contact in the air when challenging for a high kick. Two quick tries followed, a good line from the scrum half for the first and an interception for the second, giving Anselmians a 19-29 lead. Another penalty for the visitors came before Ciaran Shone received a yellow card for an intentional knock on. From the resulting penalty Anselmians scored their final try, 19-39. A third yellow followed soon after, this time for captain, Jamie Loska, leaving Stoke with thirteen players on the pitch. Anselmians extended their lead with a final penalty. With ten minutes left to play Stoke were in danger of collapsing. However, they hung on to get fifteen men back on the pitch and look for a fourth try to at least earn a try bonus point. The final play of the game saw Maunu Shutte take a clearance kick close to the touchline, fifteen metres inside his own half. He beat the two chasing defenders and raced all the way to the line to score under the posts to end a disappointing half on a positive note. The conversion was added to make the final score 26-42, a bonus point secured.
Another home game this Saturday, Manchester the visitors. As always your support will be much appreciated by the players.
